SMEs – It’s Time to Google Your Business!

Any business owner will know that you can’t stay in business if you don’t grow your business.  The competition nowadays is fierce due to the fact that we live in the Digital Age and any business that wants to succeed needs a strong web presence. This will lead to an increase in customers, followed by an increase in revenue, enabling you to stay ahead of the crowd and keep your business in business.  The last thing you need as a business owner is to experience a slump in sales which could lead to debt and insolvency.

This is where Google can come rushing to the rescue with Google My Business.  Google wants to help you to reach out to the right type of customers, making it easier for people to find the products and services they’re looking for.  Google is rolling out new local search and Google Maps features that have been designed to eradicate the line between the physical and digital worlds.  

You can leverage the power of these new features and make Google your best friend.  The first thing to do is to create a Google My Business listing and it’s not as difficult as you may think, even if you’re not the most tech savvy person on the planet.  Here’s a step by step guide that should lead you through the process with ease:

•Look for your business name in the Google My Business search bar.  If your business information is already there, it will appear on screen alongside a request to verify the contact email address.  If somebody else has claimed your business, then don’t worry, Google has a simple process that you can follow to reclaim it.

•If Google doesn’t return any information about your business, then you’ll be met with a series of prompts to add your listing.  Make sure you have logs, photos and videos ready to upload onto your Google My Business Dashboard (that’s where you manage your Google My Business listing).

•The final piece in the puzzle is to verify your business information.  This can be done by telephone, email or postcard – depending on your location.  Follow the prompts and choose which method of communication is most relevant for you.  Remember, though, unless you’re using an automated listing tool to add your business to Google My Business, your company profile won’t appear online until the verification process is complete.  When verifying by postcard, the postcard itself can take a few weeks to arrive which will delay your appearance.  

Your business will automatically be added to Google Maps which could drive more prospective customers to your business premises or website, increasing your reach on an ongoing basis without you having to do anything!  

When adding your business to Google, don’t forget that accurate business listings will raise your company profile in local search results, making it much easier for potential customers in your own region to find you and buy your products or services.
