Managerial Mistakes to Avoid for Small Business Owners

Anybody running a small business and employing staff will know that, on a small team, if a member of staff leaves, it can dramatically affect your business.  Staff retention can be a continuing problem for small business owners, especially when the person leaving is an excellent member of staff, a benefit to your business that you’ve come to rely on.  Today we’re going to take a look at some of the mistakes made by managers and business owners, mistakes that are likely to lead to a costly exit as a great team member walks away.

  • Overworking it – while it can be tempting to delegate the work to your most conscientious staff members, leaving them with a pile of tasks to complete, it’s counterproductive.  Overworking your best employees makes them fell as if they’re being punished for great performance.  If you do increase their workload, then make sure that you also increase both their status and their pay to reflect the extra responsibilities that they shoulder.
  • Failing to reward good work – everybody wants recognition for the hard work they do, none more so than those who are really giving their all.  You’d be surprised at how effective an acknowledgement of their efforts and a pat on the back can be – it makes people feel good about themselves, increases confidence and will make sure that the top performers feel appreciated for their input.
  • Neglecting to upskill staff – when you have a talented and hardworking employee look out for opportunities for them to improve their skills.  Whether you do this by offering them training or by sharing your own skills and knowledge, talented employees love to learn how to be even better at their job.
  • Taking employees for granted – without your employees, your business wouldn’t be able to operate.  Let your employees know that you appreciate them and rely on them for the success of your business.  If they feel involved in this way, they are far more likely to take pride in doing a good job.
  • Letting people down – making promises to people means that you should keep those promises.  If you want your employees to trust and respect you, then you need to show them that you deserve that trust and respect.  Research proves that a workforce of people who feel valued is a more productive workforce.
  • Hiring and promoting the wrong people – hiring the right people is essential for a happy and productive workforce.  Promote those who have demonstrated their commitment to you and your business – they deserve it and may look elsewhere for a job if they think their efforts are not leading to career progress.
  • Counteracting creativity – talented employees will try to improve everything – procedures, policies, systems, the environment and even the products or services you provide.  Ignoring this desire to create will not only limit your employees, it will limit you and your business too.  Encourage this type of creativity – it generally leads to improvement and innovation which will be good for your business.
