How to Make Working in the Gig Economy Work for You



Over the past few weeks we’ve been taking an in depth look at the Gig Economy, how to work in the gig economy and still maintain a steady cash flow while doing so.  Many of those who work in the gig economy are working from a home office for much of their time.  There are those who work at physical locations, performing short-term tasks as experts and consultants but most of their work planning will also be carried out at their home base.  Today we’re going to give you some tips on how to make working in the gig economy work for you.

Firstly, you need a strong sense of self-discipline to keep yourself organised and working steadily when there may be so many distractions around you.  We all know that there are far more attractive options that will lure you away from your desk on a regular basis so setting some regular hours for yourself is essential if you want to keep on top of your work and meet client deadlines.  If you’re easily distracted, working in the gig economy may not be for you. 

If your work involves a computer, then there are whole host of other distractions available at the touch of a button – a quick look at the news websites, hop on Facebook for five minutes or check your bank balance while you’re thinking about it.  Don’t be tempted!  Here are a few tips to help avoid distractions of this type:

  • Set a regular time for working and stick to it.
  • If you need to get online to carry out research, communicate with clients and potential clients or to use a project management app, make sure that you only open tabs for websites that you need for work.  Don’t even look at Facebook, your personal email account or any of your other online haunts.
  • If you’re having a break from work (whether it’s for ten minutes or a full lunch break) – do so in a different room, rather than being tempted to sit in front of your PC as you enjoy a cuppa, scrolling through Facebook or Instagram to see what’s going on.  If you need something for your mind to do whilst taking a break and there’s nobody to talk to, read a book or a newspaper instead.
  • Turn off social media notifications – if you hear a ping alerting you to a personal email or Facebook message, it’s always tempting to have a quick look when you should be concentrating on work instead.

If you find it difficult to get yourself into work mode why not dress for work in a professional manner?  This is a favourite trick for many who work from home – it puts them into the right mood for work if they are in business attire.  Yes, it’s tempting to work in pyjamas (and nothing wrong with doing so on the odd occasion) but that may get you feeling a little too relaxed to work effectively.

Some people who work from home will get dressed, leave the house, walk around the block and then return to the house to start work.  The small commute is often all that’s needed to put them into a work frame of mind.
